September was full of meaningful moments at Northside! A heartfelt highlight was our September 11th Town Hall assembly honoring our many community first responders, including nurses, sheriffs, firefighters, park rangers, and police captains. Students thanked our guests for modeling respect, responsibility, perseverance, honesty, cooperation, and courage—showing our BEARS what it means to serve others. It was a special gathering filled with gratitude, pride, and community spirit.
Teachers and students have been busy learning to use i-Ready, our new diagnostic assessment tool, to identify students’ strengths and learning needs. In grades 1–3, teachers conducted one-on-one phonics assessments to guide instruction and strengthen the foundational skills that build confident readers. Taking the time to thoroughly assess students at the beginning of the year sets a clear path forward for targeted instruction.
Our enrichment programs and clubs are underway, including TK–6 music, Jr. Maker’s Lab, the Wellness Center, Spelling Bee, and Cross Country. Following our September 25 Student Leadership Kick-Off assembly, we look forward to filling Student Council and Rocky’s Rangers service positions in early October. These opportunities support our mission to nurture the whole child and develop leaders for our school and beyond.
As always, it’s great to be a BEAR!
Sincerely,
Principal Gallo

Annabell is one of our outstanding Student of the Month recipients! Her teacher, Mr. Loder, shares:
Annabell is a wonderful example of a determined and dedicated student. She consistently gives her best effort, works through challenging math problems, and asks for help when she needs it. Her creativity and attention to detail shine in her work, especially her Civilization Project map, which showcased her artistic talent and commitment to historical accuracy.
Annabell brings that same perseverance to PE. She set a goal of scoring during our competitive soccer games and kept trying day after day. After weeks of effort, she scored against students with years of soccer experience!
Congratulations, Annabell! Your hard work, creativity, and determination make us proud!

Our TK teacher, Ms. Lily Palmer, is new to teaching and all in! She spent her summer attending trainings and transforming her classroom into a TK wonderland. She collected, purchased, and built furniture and toys to create a calm, welcoming space that encourages imaginative play. Ms. Palmer brings energy and care to each day, modeling kindness and respect while meeting students where they are. Her thoughtful approach helps our youngest BEARS feel supported, build confidence, and grow. Beyond the classroom, she leads our Sunshine Committee, brightening staff members’ days with thoughtful notes and delicious treats to celebrate birthdays each month. We’re grateful for the warmth and joy she brings to Northside!

Our TK/K students took their learning on the road this month with their first field trip to Apple Hill! Connecting their lessons about Johnny Appleseed to hands-on experiences, they learned about apple orchards, harvesting, and making apple dumplings. For many, it was also their first bus ride! They returned to school with wonderful memories, new experiences, and a little extra confidence. A special thank-you to teachers Sally Storamaski, Lily Palmer, Teri Woodard, and Katie Loder for organizing this memorable trip. It was a great day to be a TK/K Bear!

Northside’s enrichment programs, clubs, and sports give students opportunities to explore their interests, build friendships, and develop new skills. This month, we proudly hosted the first cross-country meet of the season! Special thanks to coaches Jen Todd and Brooke Rahn for bringing this event together. From marking the trail and communicating with other coaches to organizing volunteers, their hard work helped create a memorable experience for our runners. Thank you to everyone who supported the event and cheered on our students!
Our Spelling Bee Club kicked off this month! Led by Mrs. Amanda Dunphy, the club meets Mondays and Wednesdays during lunch. Mrs. Dunphy creates a supportive, engaging environment where students build spelling skills and confidence as they prepare to become a competitive Spelling Bee team. Please contact the office for more information.

Our Word Buster program is up and running at Northside! Deborah Burch has recruited, organized, and trained a dedicated team of volunteers to support our primary classrooms. Volunteers work one-on-one with students to practice high-frequency sight words, building reading skills one BEAR at a time! Thank you, Deborah and our wonderful volunteers, for making this program possible. If you’re interested in joining the team, please contact the front office at (530) 885-4079.
