Welcome to Northside STEAM School! We are excited to begin another year of learning, growth, and discovery with you. Every member of our staff is committed to providing a safe, supportive, and engaging learning environment where every child can thrive academically, socially, and emotionally.

At Northside, our motto, "Educating the Whole Child," reflects our commitment to developing confident, compassionate, and lifelong learners. Through a rigorous curriculum infused with Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM), we encourage students to think critically, solve problems creatively, and make meaningful connections to their community and the world around them.

We believe that educating children is a partnership between school and home. Your involvement plays a vital role in your child's success. We encourage you to stay connected by talking with your child about school, maintaining regular communication with teachers, volunteering when possible, and participating in our Parent Teacher Association (PTA). Together, we can provide the support and encouragement our students need to achieve their fullest potential.

This handbook is designed to serve as a helpful resource for families.  The information is organized by topic to help families quickly locate information about school programs, procedures, expectations, and resources. We encourage you to use it as a reference throughout the school year. 

We look forward to partnering with you to ensure every student experiences a challenging, engaging, and rewarding school year. Thank you for taking the time to review this handbook with your child and for being an active member of the Northside STEAM School community.

The mission of Northside STEAM School is to enrich and inspire every student through a rigorous, engaging curriculum infused with Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM). Guided by our motto, "Educating the Whole Child," we are committed to fostering academic excellence while nurturing the social-emotional growth and well-being of every learner.

We believe that meaningful learning occurs when students make connections between themselves, their community, and the world around them. Through authentic learning experiences, students develop the knowledge, skills, and character needed to become responsible, compassionate, and engaged citizens.

Keeping your family's contact information current helps ensure that we can communicate with you quickly regarding your child's education, attendance, health, and any emergencies. Please update changes to your home address, phone numbers, email addresses, employment information, and emergency contacts through the Aeries Parent Portal. If you need assistance updating your information, please contact the school office.

ParentSquare is our primary communication platform. School-wide announcements, classroom updates, event reminders, and emergency notifications will be communicated through ParentSquare. Aeries Parent Portal 

All families enrolled in Black Oak Mine Unified School District have access to the Aeries Parent Portal, the primary source for important student information. Through the Parent Portal, families can update contact information, review student grades, attendance, demographic information, and other important school records.

If you have not yet activated your Parent Portal account or need assistance accessing your account, please contact the school office. We encourage all families to regularly access the Parent Portal to stay informed and ensure their contact information remains current.

Parent Teacher Association (PTA)

At Northside STEAM School, we believe that strong family involvement is essential to student success. Research consistently shows that schools with active parent participation create stronger school communities and provide greater opportunities for student achievement. We encourage all families to become involved through volunteering and participation in our Parent Teacher Association (PTA).

The Northside PTA is a partnership of parents, staff, students, and community members dedicated to enriching our students' educational experience. Through membership, fundraising, and volunteer efforts, the PTA supports many of the special programs, activities, and events that make Northside a unique place to learn.

PTA membership is open to everyone, and annual dues are $5.00 per person. Members have voting privileges on PTA business and help shape the organization's work throughout the year. We welcome your ideas, talents, and participation as we work together to support every Northside student.

Volunteer Clearance 

To help ensure the safety of our students, all volunteers must complete the District's volunteer application, fingerprint clearance, background check, tuberculosis (TB) clearance through the District nurse, and receive approval from the District Office before volunteering. All volunteer paperwork is available on the district and school site websites.

Your time, talents, and support strengthen our school community and enrich the educational experience of every student. Thank you for partnering with us to create meaningful learning opportunities and make Northside STEAM School a wonderful place to learn. 

 

Chapter 2

Attendance

Every Day Matters

Regular attendance is one of the strongest predictors of student success. This chapter explains attendance expectations, reporting procedures, independent study, and how families can support consistent attendance.

Student Attendance

Regular school attendance is one of the most important factors in a child's academic success. Students who attend school consistently build stronger academic skills, develop positive relationships with teachers and peers, and are better prepared for future success.

The California School Dashboard identifies Chronic Absenteeism as a key indicator of school performance, recognizing the strong connection between regular attendance and student achievement. While school funding is based on student attendance, our focus at Black Oak Mine Unified School District extends far beyond funding. We believe that being present at school every day gives students the greatest opportunity to learn, grow, and thrive. 

How Families Can Help

Families play an essential role in supporting regular attendance. You can help by:

• Scheduling medical, dental, and other appointments outside of school hours whenever possible.
• Notifying the school office promptly whenever your child will be absent.
• Requesting a Short-Term Independent Study Contract for planned absences of five (5) or more consecutive school days. This option helps students remain engaged with their learning during extended absences.

A Note About Absences

Although some absences may be considered excused under California law, all absences are included when the State of California calculates Chronic Absenteeism for the California School Dashboard. In addition, schools do not receive state funding for days when students are absent.

Every day of attendance matters—for your child's education and for our school community.

Reporting Absences

If your child will be absent, please notify the school office each day they are absent. For your child's safety, we ask that absences be reported as early as possible each morning.

Absences may be reported by:

• Calling the school office
• Emailing northsideattendance@bomusd.org

When reporting an absence, please include:

• Student's full name
• Teacher's name
• Date(s) of the absence
• Reason for the absence

If you are unable to notify the school by phone or email, please send a written note with your child upon their return to school.

Prompt communication helps us ensure student safety, maintain accurate attendance records, and provide support when needed.

District Attendance Protocols

To promote regular attendance and comply with California attendance laws, Black Oak Mine Unified School District follows these attendance procedures:

1. Classroom attendance is recorded within the first 15 minutes of the school day.
2. Within 45 minutes of the start of school, an automated phone, email, and text notification is sent to families of absent students.
3. After one unexcused absence, school staff will contact the parent or guardian to verify the reason for the absence.
4. After three unexcused absences, or 10% absenteeism during a quarter, a First SARB Letter is sent home. (SARB stands for School Attendance Review Board.)
5. After eight unexcused absences, or 10% absenteeism for the semester, a Second SARB Letter is sent, and a district attendance meeting is scheduled.
6. Continued absenteeism may result in a Pre-SARB meeting with the FAST Coordinator and School Attendance Review Team (SART).
7. If attendance concerns continue, the family may be referred to the El Dorado County School Attendance Review Board (SARB).

Independent Study

Students who will be absent for reasons other than illness for 1–15 school days are encouraged to request a Short-Term Independent Study Contract.

To participate:

• Request the contract at least one week before the planned absence.
• A parent or guardian must pick up the contract from the school office.
• The completed packet must be returned on the student's first day back to receive attendance credit.

Please note that an Independent Study packet does not replace all classroom instruction or activities missed during an absence. Students are responsible for completing any additional assignments assigned by the teacher.

Students experiencing circumstances beyond their control—such as hospitalization, a family bereavement, or serious illness—may also be eligible for an attendance packet when appropriate.

Missed School Work

There is no substitute for daily classroom instruction. While absences are sometimes unavoidable, regular attendance provides students with the greatest opportunity to learn and succeed.

Please do not contact the school office to request missed assignments during an absence. Teachers will provide missed work and instructions when the student returns to school.

Students will receive the same number of school days to complete missed assignments as the number of days they were absent and will receive full credit for work completed within that timeframe, in accordance with district policy.

Tardy Arrival & Early Check-Out

Arriving Late

Students arriving after the start of the school day must be accompanied by a parent or guardian to the school office to sign in and obtain an admit slip before reporting to class.

Leaving Early

If a student needs to leave school before the regular dismissal time, a parent, guardian, or authorized emergency contact must sign the student out through the school office.

For student safety, children will only be released to individuals listed on the student's emergency contact form. Please be prepared to present a valid photo ID if requested.

Perfect Attendance

As part of Northside STEAM School's Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) program, students may earn attendance incentives for outstanding attendance.

Perfect Quarterly Attendance

Students are eligible for quarterly attendance recognition if they are present for at least a portion of every school day during the attendance period. Students who arrive late or leave early may still qualify, provided they attend part of every school day.

Perfect Annual Attendance

Students are eligible for annual perfect attendance recognition only if they have met the following requirements for the entire school year. 

• No absences
• No tardies
• No early check-outs

 

Chapter 3

Daily School Procedures

Safe, Predictable, and Welcoming

This chapter explains daily arrival, dismissal, transportation, and school procedures that help every student begin and end the day safely while supporting an orderly learning environment.

Arrival & Departure - Focus on Student Safety

Student safety is our highest priority. Morning arrival and afternoon dismissal are the busiest times on campus, and we ask every family to help maintain a safe environment by following all traffic procedures, driving slowly, and showing courtesy to staff, students, and other families.

To ensure the safety of all students, families should use the designated parent drop-off and pick-up area whenever transporting children to or from school. This area is designed to provide the safest and most efficient process for students while keeping traffic flowing smoothly.

Parents and guardians are asked to remain in their vehicles while using the drop-off and pick-up lane. Please do not park in the church parking lot or other school parking areas to drop off or pick up students. Having students walk through parking lots or across traffic areas without adult supervision creates unnecessary safety risks.

Thank you for helping us maintain a safe, orderly, and welcoming campus for every Northside STEAM School student.

Morning Arrival

Students may arrive on campus beginning at 8:30 a.m.  School officially begins at 8:40 a.m. (See Appendix for Bell Schedule) 

Students Arriving by Car

Families transporting students by car should use the designated drop-off lane and pull forward as far as possible before allowing students to exit the vehicle. This helps keep traffic moving safely and efficiently. Staff members are available each morning to assist younger students as needed.

To help maintain an efficient drop-off process, please make sure your child is ready to exit the vehicle when you reach the unloading area. Students should have their backpack, lunch, water bottle, and all necessary school materials prepared before arriving at school.

 

 

Accessible Parking

Accessible parking spaces are available in the front parking lot facing the playground for vehicles displaying a valid disabled parking placard or license plate.

We appreciate your cooperation in keeping these designated spaces available for those who need them.

Bus Loading Zone

For the safety of students and staff, no private vehicles are permitted in the bus loading zone located in front of the school office.

This area is reserved exclusively for school buses during arrival and dismissal. Please do not stop, park, or use this area for student drop-off or pick-up.

Students Arriving by Bus

Students arriving by bus should exit promptly and report directly to their assigned classroom.

Before School “Soft Start”

Northside STEAM School begins each day with a Soft Start, providing students with a calm and welcoming transition into the school day.

Upon arrival, students should:

• Report directly to their classroom, or
• Go directly to the cafeteria if eating breakfast.

After breakfast, students should proceed immediately to their classroom.

This routine allows students time to unpack, prepare for learning, connect with classmates and teachers, and begin the day in a positive, organized manner.

Afternoon Dismissal

A safe and orderly dismissal ensures that every student arrives home safely while maintaining efficient traffic flow on and around campus.

Families are asked to follow all dismissal procedures and directions provided by staff. Your patience and cooperation help create a safe and positive end to each school day.

Student Dismissal

At the end of the school day, students report directly to their assigned dismissal location based on their established transportation plan.

• Bus riders report directly to the bus loading zone.
• Students being picked up by a parent or guardian report to the designated parent pick-up area and remain there until directed to their vehicle.

To help ensure a safe dismissal, families should establish their child's transportation plan before the school day begins.

If a change in dismissal plans is necessary, please notify the school office as early as possible, preferably before lunch, so staff has adequate time to communicate the change to your child.

Parent Pick-Up

Families picking up students should use the designated parent pick-up lane.

To help keep traffic flowing safely:

• Remain in your vehicle.
• Pull forward as directed by staff.
• Follow all traffic instructions.

For student safety, please do not park in the church parking lot or other campus parking areas to meet your child. Students should never walk through parking lots or cross traffic areas without an adult.

Using the designated pick-up lane reduces congestion and helps ensure a safe dismissal for everyone.

Transportation Changes

We understand that schedules occasionally change. Whenever possible, please make sure your child knows their dismissal plan before arriving at school.

If transportation changes are necessary, notify the school office before lunch whenever possible. Last-minute changes are difficult to communicate and may result in delays or confusion during dismissal.

Late Pick-Up

Students who have not been picked up within 15 minutes of dismissal will be escorted to the school office. Office staff will contact the student's parent or guardian to arrange pick-up.

Parking & Traffic During Special Events 

Parking at Northside STEAM School is limited, particularly during large school events such as Back-to-School Night, Open House, and other community celebrations. To help accommodate families, staff members park behind the school, and we partner with our good neighbors at Cool Community Church to provide additional overflow parking.

We greatly appreciate the church's generosity and ask that families help us maintain this valued partnership by parking only in designated parking spaces, following all posted signs, and respecting church property. Your cooperation helps ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone attending our school events.

Academics & Enrichment 

Learning Every Day 

This chapter provides an overview of our academic program, curriculum, assessments, homework expectations, report cards, and the many opportunities that support student learning and achievement.

Curriculum & Instruction

Black Oak Mine Unified School District is committed to providing a high-quality, standards-based educational program for all students. Before instructional materials are adopted for use in classrooms, they undergo a thorough review process involving teachers, administrators, and the District Curriculum Council, which includes parent representatives. Families interested in serving on the Curriculum Council are encouraged to contact the school principal for more information.

Instruction is aligned with the California Common Core State Standards (CCSS) in English Language Arts and Mathematics, the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) for Science, and the California History–Social Science Framework, along with other state-adopted standards. Teachers use a variety of high-quality instructional and supplemental materials to enrich learning, meet the diverse needs of all students, and support academic success.

Assessment/Testing

Northside STEAM School uses a variety of formative and summative assessments throughout the school year to monitor student progress, guide instruction, and identify students who may benefit from additional support or enrichment.

Students in grades 1–6 participate in the i-Ready Reading and Mathematics assessments approximately every six to eight weeks. These assessments help teachers measure student growth and monitor progress toward grade-level standards. Students in grades 3-6 also participate in interim CAASPP (SBAC) assessments throughout the year to prepare for the statewide California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP) administered each spring. 

Students in Transitional Kindergarten through Grade 2 participate in the Multitudes Literacy Screener, a research-based assessment that measures foundational reading skills. The results help teachers identify individual learning needs, guide instruction, and provide targeted support to help every student become a successful reader. 

Teachers regularly review assessment data during Professional Learning Community (PLC) collaboration time to make informed instructional decisions, plan interventions, monitor student progress, and support report card grades.

Students identified as English Learners participate annually in the English Language Proficiency Assessments for California (ELPAC) Summative Assessment, which measures progress toward English language proficiency.

Homework

At Northside STEAM School, we believe homework reinforces classroom learning while helping students develop responsibility, organization, time management, perseverance, and independent study skills. Homework also provides families with an opportunity to stay informed about their child's learning.

Homework is intended to reinforce skills that have already been taught in the classroom and should never introduce new learning. Students are encouraged to read each day independently in addition to completing homework assignments.

If your child experiences difficulty with homework, please contact the classroom teacher so we can work together to provide appropriate support.

Students are responsible for completing homework missed due to an absence. They will be given the same number of school days to make up assignments as the number of days they were absent, in accordance with district policy. Homework is intended to provide practice and feedback and will not be used as the sole measure of academic achievement.

 

Teacher Responsibilities

Teachers will:

• Communicate classroom homework expectations and procedures at the beginning of the school year.
• Clearly explain assignments, expectations, and due dates.
• Assign meaningful homework that aligns with classroom instruction and can be completed independently.
• Provide students with opportunities to ask questions before leaving school.
• Review completed work and provide timely, constructive feedback.
• Communicate with families when additional support is needed.

Student Responsibilities

Students are expected to:

• Record homework assignments.
• Ask questions if directions are unclear.
• Complete assignments neatly and on time.
• Do their best work independently.
• Share completed homework and school learning with their family.

Parent/Guardian Responsibilities

Families can support student success by:

• Providing a quiet, well-lit place to complete homework.
• Establishing a consistent homework routine.
• Ensuring students have the necessary supplies.
• Encouraging and supporting their child while allowing them to complete assignments independently.
• Communicating with the teacher if homework becomes consistently difficult or overwhelming.

Working together, families and teachers can help students develop the skills and habits that lead to lifelong learning and academic success.

Progress Reports and Report Cards

Parents and guardians will receive a progress report midway through the first semester and a report card at the end of each semester.  If warranted, some students may receive a progress report midway through the second semester. Students in Transitional Kindergarten through Grade 3 receive a standards-based report card, while students in Grades 4–6 receive a traditional letter-grade report card.

Standards-based report cards measure a student's progress toward meeting end-of-year grade-level standards. Because students are working toward these standards throughout the year, it is common for students to receive marks such as "2 – Approaching the Standard" during the first semester and "3 – Meets the Standard" by the end of the school year. Families are encouraged to communicate regularly with their child's teacher throughout the year to discuss academic progress, celebrate successes, and address any concerns.

Library

Northside STEAM School is proud to offer a welcoming library that encourages students to develop a lifelong love of reading. Students visit the library regularly with their classes.  Depending on their grade level, students may check out up to two library books at a time. Students are expected to care for library materials and return books on time so they are available for others to enjoy. Students with overdue or lost books may not check out additional materials until the books are returned or replacement costs have been addressed.  Families are encouraged to support good library habits by helping students care for and return borrowed books. Charges may be assessed for lost or damaged library books to help offset the cost of replacement or repair.  Northside hosts two Book Fairs each year, with proceeds used to purchase new books and expand our library collection for all students.

Maker Lab

 

Northside STEAM School's Maker Lab provides students in grades TK-3 with hands-on, experiential learning opportunities that inspire creativity, innovation, and problem-solving. As an extension of our STEAM program, the Maker Lab encourages students to explore, design, build, and create while developing collaboration, perseverance, and critical thinking skills.

STEAM Enrichment 

At Northside STEAM School, all students participate in enriching learning experiences that integrate Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM). Through hands-on, project-based learning, students develop creativity, critical thinking, collaboration, communication, and problem-solving skills.

Depending on their grade level, students have opportunities to explore a variety of enrichment experiences, including fine arts, ceramics, theater, music, dance, engineering, and other STEAM-based activities that enhance and extend classroom learning.

We believe our families are one of our greatest resources. If you have a special talent, career experience, hobby, or interest related to STEAM, the arts, or another area of expertise, we encourage you to share your gifts with our students. Please contact your child's teacher if you are interested in volunteering. We would love to partner with you to enrich the educational experiences of our Northside students.

Student Placement 

Class placement is a thoughtful and collaborative process involving classroom teachers, special education staff, support staff, and the principal. Our goal is to create balanced classrooms where every student has the opportunity to succeed. When making placement decisions, we consider many factors, including academic needs, learning styles, social-emotional development, work habits, behavior, gender balance, and positive peer relationships.

Because of the many factors involved in creating balanced classes, requests for specific teachers may not be accommodated. However, parents and guardians are encouraged to share information about their child's learning needs with the current classroom teacher to help inform the placement process.

Once class placements have been finalized, requests for classroom changes will not be considered until two weeks after the start of the school year and only if space is available in the requested classroom.

Planning for the upcoming school year begins each spring. Class sizes and grade-level configurations are determined by student enrollment and state staffing requirements. As a result, Northside STEAM School may have multi-age (combination) classrooms. Our teachers are highly trained and experienced in meeting the academic and social-emotional needs of students in these learning environments. As we often say, "We teach children, not grades."

Transitional Kindergarten/Kindergarten

Students who turn 4 years old on or before September 1 are eligible to enroll in Transitional Kindergarten (TK), the first year of a two-year Kindergarten program designed to prepare young learners for academic success. After completing TK, students continue to Kindergarten.

In some cases, Kindergarten-eligible students may be recommended for TK if additional time is needed to develop foundational academic, social-emotional, and developmental skills. Some students may be placed in a multi-age TK/Kindergarten classroom, where instruction is developmentally appropriate and tailored to each student's learning goals while providing opportunities to learn and grow together.

Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS)

At Northside STEAM School, we believe that positive relationships and clear expectations create the foundation for a safe, respectful, and engaging learning environment. Our schoolwide behavior system is based on Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS), a proactive approach that teaches, reinforces, and celebrates positive behavior while providing support for students who need additional guidance.

Our PBIS framework is centered around four schoolwide expectations, known as PAWS:

 

 

These expectations are taught, modeled, and reinforced throughout the school in classrooms, on the playground, in the cafeteria, on the bus, and during all school activities. Our Behavioral Expectations Matrix (see appendix) outlines what PAWS looks like in each school setting.

Every member of the Northside staff is responsible for teaching and reinforcing these expectations. Classroom teachers incorporate the PAWS expectations into their classroom routines, rules, and behavior supports, helping students develop the skills needed to be responsible, respectful, and successful members of our school community.

We believe that when students understand expectations and receive consistent encouragement and support, they are empowered to make positive choices that contribute to a safe and successful learning environment for everyone.

Schoolwide Recognition & Reinforcements  

At Northside STEAM School, we believe that recognizing positive behavior helps build a strong, supportive school community. Students are encouraged and recognized by all staff members for demonstrating our PAWS expectations: Personal Best, Act Responsibly, Work & Play Safely, and Show Respect.

Students may earn PAWS Slips from any staff member whenever they demonstrate positive behavior. There is no limit to the number of PAWS Slips a student can earn. Weekly PAWS drawings and student recognitions take place during our Town Hall meetings, where we celebrate students who consistently model our schoolwide expectations.

Each month, classroom teachers also recognize one student as Student of the Month. This honor is awarded to students who consistently demonstrate the PAWS expectations through their actions, attitude, and commitment to being positive members of our school community.

CharacterStrong 

In addition to PBIS, Northside implements the CharacterStrong program to intentionally teach social-emotional skills and character development. Throughout the year, students learn and practice monthly character traits such as respect, responsibility, kindness, empathy, perseverance, courage, gratitude, and honesty. These lessons help students build positive relationships, make responsible decisions, and develop the skills needed to be successful in school and in life. CharacterStrong traits are reinforced throughout the school day and celebrated alongside our PAWS expectations.

Discipline 

At Northside STEAM School, our goal is to create a safe, respectful, and positive learning environment where every student can thrive. Through our PBIS framework, we teach, model, and reinforce appropriate behaviors while helping students develop the social-emotional skills needed to make positive choices.

Whenever possible, discipline is viewed as an opportunity to teach appropriate behavior rather than simply punish inappropriate behavior. When students have difficulty meeting school expectations, staff work with them to understand the behavior, repair any harm caused, and learn more appropriate ways to respond in the future. Depending on the nature, severity, and frequency of the behavior, consequences may include:

• Reminder or reteaching of expectations
• Student conference
• Parent or guardian contact
• Loss of privileges
• Alternative recess activity
• Restorative practices
• Behavior referral
• Conference with administration
• In-school intervention or suspension
• Suspension, when appropriate under California Education Code

Parents or guardians will be notified by the classroom teacher or school administrator whenever significant disciplinary action is taken.

Examples of behaviors that may result in disciplinary action include, but are not limited to:

• Inappropriate language
• Horseplay or unsafe behavior
• Noncompliance or defiance
• Class disruption
• Destruction of property
• Bullying (repeated, unwanted aggressive behavior)
• Harassment (including racial, sexual, or physical harassment)
• Physical fighting
• Theft
• Threats to self or others

Suspension

Suspension is used only when other interventions have been unsuccessful or when required by the seriousness of a student's behavior, as outlined in the California Education Code.  Suspension is a serious consequence and is intended to reinforce the importance of making safe, respectful, and responsible choices. Participation in special activities is a privilege earned through consistently demonstrating the Northside STEAM School PAWS expectations. Students assigned an in-school or out-of-school suspension may lose the privilege of participating in extracurricular activities, assemblies, field trips, and other special events, as outlined in the school's suspension guidelines.

• One-day suspension: No participation in special activities for five (5) school days, beginning on the first day of suspension.
• Two-day suspension: No participation in special activities for ten (10) school days, beginning on the first day of suspension.
• Three-day suspension: No participation in special activities for fifteen (15) school days, beginning on the first day of suspension.
• Four- or five-day suspension: No participation in special activities for twenty (20) school days, beginning on the first day of suspension.

Before returning to the classroom, suspended students will participate in a re-entry meeting with the principal and their parent or guardian. The purpose of the meeting is to review expectations, develop a plan for a successful return to school, and provide opportunities to repair relationships, rebuild trust, and restore the student's positive participation in the school community.

Students in grades 4–6 who wish to participate in overnight field trips may be required to sign a behavior contract along with their parents or guardian. Participation in overnight field trips is a privilege and may be contingent upon a student's ability to consistently demonstrate safe, respectful, and responsible behavior in accordance with Northside STEAM School's PAWS expectations.

Playground Expectations

At Northside STEAM School, recess is an important part of the school day, providing students with opportunities to be active, build friendships, and practice positive social skills. Playground expectations are taught and reinforced through our PAWS program (see the Behavior Expectations Matrix in the appendix). Three times per year, all students participate in Procedures Day, during which they are directly taught playground expectations, safety procedures, and approved games.

To promote safety and reduce conflicts, students are encouraged to play games with clearly defined rules that have been approved by school staff.  Personal sport or playground equipment may not be brought from home, as the school provides equipment for student use during recess.

End of Recess Procedures

Three loud whistles signal the end of recess. At this signal, students are expected to stop playing immediately, take a knee, and listen for instructions. A single whistle signals students to return all playground equipment to its designated location and line up promptly with their class.

Emergency Signal

In the event of an emergency, a long whistle signals students to stop all activity immediately and freeze where they are. Students should remain still, stay quiet, and listen carefully for further instructions from staff.

Health, Safety & Student Welfare

Healthy Students Learn Best 

This chapter outlines our health services, medication procedures, emergency preparedness, student release practices, and other policies designed to protect the well-being of every child.

Health Office

The health and well-being of our students are essential to their academic success. Northside STEAM School's health team works to support students so they are healthy, safe, and ready to learn each day.

Our health office is staffed by the school secretary, a Health Specialist, and the District Nurse. The Health Specialist provides daily health support to students, while the District Nurse provides training and oversight in areas such as CPR, first aid, medication administration, emergency response, and other student health needs to ensure students receive safe, high-quality care.

The District Nurse also provides a variety of health services, including:

• Health assessments for general and special education students
• Vision and hearing screenings
• Review and maintenance of student health and immunization records
• Monitoring and prevention of communicable diseases
• Health education, counseling, and referrals for students and families
• Support for emergency preparedness and school health programs

Illness or Injury During School Hours

To help keep our school community healthy, students who are ill should remain at home until they are well enough to return to school. Symptoms such as fever, vomiting, diarrhea, persistent cough, or other signs of a contagious illness may require your child to stay home. If your child is diagnosed with a contagious disease, please notify the school office as soon as possible so appropriate health precautions can be taken.

If a student becomes ill or is injured during the school day, they should notify their teacher or the supervising staff member immediately. Students needing medical attention will be referred to the school office or health room by a staff member. If it is determined that a student is too ill to remain at school or requires additional medical attention, a parent or guardian will be contacted using the emergency contact information on file.

Please keep your child's emergency contact information current in the Aeries Parent Portal. Accurate and up-to-date contact information is essential so we can reach a parent, guardian, or authorized emergency contact quickly in the event of an illness or emergency.

Medication at School

Whenever possible, medications should be administered at home. If a student must take medication during the school day, the following procedures must be followed to ensure the safety of all students.

• A completed Medication at School Authorization Form, signed by both the parent/guardian and the student's licensed healthcare provider, must be on file before any medication can be given at school. Forms are available in the school health office.
• All medications—prescription and over-the-counter (including Tylenol and Advil)—require written authorization from a licensed healthcare provider.
• A parent or guardian must deliver medications to the school in the original pharmacy-labeled or manufacturer's container. Medications must not be expired. Families are encouraged to request a second labeled prescription bottle for school use.
• Designated school personnel will assist students with medications that must be taken during the school day or at school-sponsored activities.
• Students may carry and self-administer prescribed emergency medications (such as asthma inhalers or epinephrine auto-injectors) only after all required physician authorization and district documentation have been completed.
• Medications are stored securely and are accessible only to authorized school personnel, except for approved student-carried emergency medications.
• Parents or guardians must notify the school immediately of any changes to a student's medication, dosage, healthcare provider, administration schedule, or medical condition and provide updated documentation.
• In accordance with California Education Code Section 49480, parents or guardians must notify the school if their child takes medication regularly, even if it is administered only at home.

Our goal is to work closely with families and healthcare providers to ensure students receive the medication they need while maintaining a safe and healthy school environment.

Emergency Cards & Contact Information 

For your child's safety, the school must maintain current emergency contact information at all times. At the beginning of each school year, families are required to complete and return an Emergency Information Form. This information enables school staff to follow your instructions if your child becomes ill or is injured at school.

Parents and guardians are responsible for updating any changes to addresses, phone numbers, emergency contacts, employment information, or childcare arrangements as soon as possible. Changes may be made through the Aeries Parent Portal or by contacting the school office.

In the event of an emergency, the school will make every effort to contact a parent or guardian first using the contact information provided. Emergency notifications may also be sent through the Parent Square communication system using the phone numbers and email addresses on file.

Child Custody & Student Release

The safety of every student is our highest priority. To ensure students are released only to authorized individuals, Northside STEAM School follows California law and any court orders on file regarding child custody and visitation. In accordance with California law, both parents have equal rights regarding their child unless the school has received a current court order that specifies custody, visitation, or other legal restrictions. To ensure the school follows any legal requirements, parents must provide the school office with a copy of the most recent court order. Without legal documentation on file, the school is required to recognize the rights of both parents.

Students will only be released to a parent, guardian, or individual listed on the student's emergency contact form and in accordance with any court orders on file. If you would like both parents or guardians to receive school communications, report cards, and other notifications, please contact the school office to arrange dual notification.

Emergency Dismissal & School Closure 

In the event of severe weather, power outages, emergencies, or other unforeseen circumstances that require a delayed start, early dismissal, or school closure, families will be notified as soon as possible.  Notifications will be sent through the District's ParentSquare communication platform via phone, email, text, and website. When appropriate, announcements may also be broadcast on local television stations KCRA 3, ABC10, and CBS13.  Keeping your contact information current in the Aeries Parent Portal ensures you receive emergency notifications promptly.

Emergency Drills

 

The safety of our students and staff is a top priority at Northside STEAM School. Throughout the school year, students are taught age-appropriate emergency procedures and participate in regular safety drills to ensure they know how to respond in the event of an emergency.

 

 

These drills are conducted in accordance with state law and district safety protocols. Staff reviews expectations with students before each drill to help ensure a calm, safe, and orderly response.

Head Lice

Northside STEAM School follows a "No Live Lice" policy to help protect the health of all students while minimizing unnecessary absences. If live lice are identified at school, parents or guardians will be notified. Whenever possible, we encourage prompt student pick-up; however, students may remain at school until the end of the school day.

Students may return to school after appropriate treatment has been completed. Before returning to class, the student will be checked by school health staff. If no live lice are found, the student may return to class.

Northside is not a "no-nit" school. The presence of nits (lice eggs) alone does not require a student to be excluded from school. If nits are found but no live lice are present, the student may remain at school. Parents or guardians will be notified and encouraged to remove the nits using a lice comb and continue treatment at home. Follow-up checks may be conducted by school health staff as needed.

Our goal is to minimize unnecessary absences while helping families effectively manage and treat head lice.

Student Insurance 

Black Oak Mine Unified School District makes available a low-cost, voluntary student accident insurance program for families. Coverage options include protection during regular school hours, as well as optional 24-hour coverage.

If your child is not already covered under a family insurance plan, you may wish to consider this program. Information about enrollment and coverage options will be sent home during the first weeks of school.  Participation in the student accident insurance program is voluntary. Families are encouraged to review the available coverage options to determine whether the program meets their individual needs.

Dress Code Guidelines

At Northside STEAM School, we strive to provide a safe, respectful, and engaging learning environment where every student can focus on learning. Student attire plays an important role in creating a positive school climate and supports a setting that is free from unnecessary distractions and promotes health, safety, and respect for others.

Parents and guardians are the primary decision-makers regarding their child's attire. However, to maintain an educational environment that supports learning for all students, all students are expected to follow the district's dress code while on school grounds and while participating in school-sponsored activities, regardless of location.

To promote a safe, respectful, and distraction-free learning environment, students are expected to follow these dress code guidelines:

• Clothing must be clean, neat, and appropriately sized.
• Shirts and tops must provide adequate coverage. Bare midriffs, spaghetti straps, halter tops, tank tops with straps less than 2 inches wide, tank tops with large arm openings, basketball jerseys (unless worn over a sleeved T-shirt), see-through, mesh, or sheer tops, tops that expose undergarments, tops that expose the entire shoulder, and tops that reveal cleavage are not permitted.
• Pants must be worn at the waist, and undergarments must not be visible.
• Leggings, spandex, athletic shorts or pants, and tights must be worn with an overgarment that extends to at least mid-thigh. Individual developmental needs and age-appropriate considerations will be taken into account.
• Dresses, skirts, and shorts must be mid-thigh (fingertip length) or longer, even when worn with leggings or tights.
• Sleepwear, pajamas, and slippers are not permitted unless designated for a school-sponsored spirit day or special event.
• Students must wear appropriate footwear at all times. For safety reasons, all shoes must fit securely and have a heel strap or enclosed heel. Slides, flip-flops, slippers, and sandals without back straps are not permitted. While Crocs worn in sport mode are allowed, they are strongly discouraged because they may not provide adequate support or traction for running and active play and can easily come off during recess or physical activity. High-heeled shoes are not permitted. 
• Hats and hoods must be removed while indoors unless approved for religious, medical, or school-authorized purposes.
• Clothing, jewelry, or accessories displaying inappropriate, offensive, discriminatory, or disruptive words, images, symbols, or messages are not permitted.

The school administration reserves the right to determine whether a student's attire is appropriate for the school environment. Students may be asked to change clothing or contact a parent or guardian if their attire does not meet these guidelines.

Electronics/Cell Phones/Watches 

To support student learning and minimize distractions, Northside STEAM School follows the California Phone-Free Schools Act (Assembly Bill 3216) and Black Oak Mine Unified School District Board Policy 5131.8.

Students may bring personal electronic devices—including cell phones, smartwatches, earbuds, headphones, tablets, and gaming devices—to school. Devices may be used before school begins and after school ends, but they must be turned off and stored in backpacks or designated storage areas during instructional time, transition periods, recess, lunch, and all other school activities unless specifically authorized by a teacher or administrator for an educational purpose.

Students may use a mobile communication device during the school day only when:

• There is an emergency or a perceived threat to safety.
• Permission has been granted by a teacher or administrator.
• The device is required for the student's health, as determined by a licensed healthcare provider.
• The device is required by the student's Individualized Education Program (IEP) or Section 504 Plan.

Personal electronic devices may never be used in a manner that disrupts learning or infringes on the privacy or safety of others. The use of electronic devices for harassment, intimidation, bullying, cyberbullying, cheating, unauthorized photography or videography, invasion of privacy, or any unlawful activity is strictly prohibited and may result in disciplinary action.

When a device is used in violation of school rules, it may be confiscated by school staff and returned in accordance with district procedures. The district is not responsible for personal electronic devices that are lost, stolen, or damaged while on campus or at school-sponsored activities.

Progressive Discipline for Electronic Device Violations

Students who violate the school's electronic device policy will be subject to the following progressive disciplinary procedures:

• First Violation: The electronic device will be confiscated by school staff and secured in a safe location. The device will be returned to the student at the end of the school day. A behavior referral will be sent home for parent notification, and the incident will be documented in Aeries.
• Second Violation: The electronic device will be confiscated and secured in the school office. A parent or guardian must retrieve the device from the office. A behavior referral requiring a parent signature will be issued, and the incident will be documented in Aeries.
• Third Violation: The electronic device will be confiscated and secured in the school office. A parent or guardian must retrieve the device. The student may lose the privilege of bringing a personal electronic device to school for the remainder of the school year. The incident will be documented in Aeries.

Please note: School administration reserves the right to address serious or repeated violations on a case-by-case basis in accordance with district policy.

Technology Use

At Northside STEAM School, technology is an important part of teaching and learning. Students in Grades 2–6 are assigned a Chromebook for use during the school day, while students in Transitional Kindergarten through Grade 1 have access to classroom iPads. Chromebooks are checked out to students at the beginning of the school year for school use only and are not to be taken home.

Before a Chromebook is issued, both the student and parent or guardian must sign the District's Technology Use Policy. Students are expected to use school technology responsibly and for educational purposes only. Families may be held financially responsible for the repair or replacement of devices that are intentionally damaged or misused. Please refer to the Technology Use Policy located at the end of this handbook for complete expectations and guidelines.  The school administration reserves the right to address serious or repeated misuse on a case-by-case basis in accordance with district policy.

Prohibited Items

To help maintain a safe, respectful, and distraction-free learning environment, students should leave non-school items at home. The following items and activities are not permitted at Northside STEAM School:

• Toys, fidget spinners, and other distracting items
• Trading cards or other collectible items
• Personal sports or playground equipment
• Candy 
• Gum
• Aerosol cans
• Cologne or perfume  
• Energy drinks
• Laser pointers
• Items intended for sale, trade, or giveaway

Bus Transportation

For the 2026–2027 school year, bus transportation fees are waived. Families wishing to use school transportation must complete a Bus Ridership Application, available on the district website under "Bus Routes, Applications, and Fees." Paper applications are also available at the school office and the District Office.

The school bus is an extension of the school day, and students are expected to follow the same PAWS expectations (see appendix for Bus Expectations Matrix). Safe and respectful behavior while riding the bus allows the driver to focus on the road and helps ensure a safe ride for everyone.

Bus transportation is a privilege, not a right. Students who do not follow bus expectations may receive a bus citation (see appendix), which may result in temporary or permanent suspension of bus privileges. Serious or repeated misconduct on the bus may also result in additional school disciplinary consequences in accordance with district policy.

Providing safe transportation is a shared responsibility among students, families, bus drivers, and school staff. Thank you for partnering with us to ensure every bus ride is safe, respectful, and successful.

Nutrition Services 

Northside STEAM School provides free nutritious breakfast and lunch each school day for all students in Transitional Kindergarten through Grade 6. Meals are well-balanced and meet the USDA Nutrition Standards and Dietary Guidelines for Americans.

Breakfast is served daily from 8:30–8:40 a.m. Students arriving after 8:40 a.m. may receive a second-chance breakfast during first recess. We encourage all students to take advantage of these healthy meal options to help them start the day ready to learn.

Textbooks

Textbooks and other instructional materials are the property of Black Oak Mine Unified School District and are issued to students on a loan basis. Students are expected to take good care of these materials and return them in the same condition in which they were issued, allowing for normal wear and tear.

Students and families may be responsible for the cost of replacing lost textbooks or repairing textbooks that have been damaged beyond normal use, including excessive writing, torn pages, or other preventable damage.

School Supplies

In accordance with the California Education Code, all supplies, instructional materials, and equipment necessary for students to participate in the educational program are provided free of charge.

Teachers may share a list of optional classroom supplies that families may choose to donate to support classroom learning; however, the purchase of these items is entirely voluntary and is not required.

If your family needs assistance obtaining items such as backpacks, lunch bags, or other school essentials, please contact the school office. We are happy to connect families with available resources and support.

Lost and Found

To help return lost items quickly, please label jackets, sweatshirts, lunch boxes, water bottles, and other personal belongings with your child's name. The Lost and Found is located outside the back office next to the staff room.

Families are encouraged to check the Lost and Found regularly for missing items. After a reasonable amount of time, unclaimed items will be donated to a local charitable organization. 

Students may wear hats and hoods while outdoors during recess and other outdoor activities. Hats and hoods must be removed while indoors unless otherwise permitted for a school-sponsored activity or spirit day.

Our focus is on learning. By leaving these items at home, students can fully participate in the school day while helping us maintain a positive, safe, and productive learning environment for everyone.

Student Council

 

Student Council provides students with opportunities to develop leadership skills while representing the voices of their classmates. Students in grades 4–6 may run for student body officer positions.  Students in grades 1–6 may serve as classroom representatives. The Student Council meets once each month during lunch to plan school activities, organize service projects, and promote school spirit.

Rocky's Rangers

Rocky's Rangers provides students with meaningful opportunities to serve our school while building responsibility, teamwork, confidence, and leadership skills. Students serving as Rocky's Rangers may take on a variety of leadership roles, including Safety Patrol, Garbology, Town Hall Crew, Flag Patrol, Peaceful Playground Monitors, Cafeteria Helpers, Office Aides, Hallway Monitors, and other campus service opportunities.

Town Hall

Town Hall is a cherished Northside STEAM School tradition that brings our entire school community together each Friday morning. These weekly gatherings celebrate student success, reinforce our PAWS expectations, build school spirit, and strengthen our positive school culture.

Each Town Hall focuses on our monthly CharacterStrong character trait and includes student recognitions, school announcements, celebrations, and opportunities to build community. Whenever possible, students take an active role in leading Town Hall, developing confidence, leadership, and public speaking skills while serving as positive role models for their peers.

Field Trips 

Field trips are an important extension of classroom learning, providing students with opportunities to reinforce classroom instruction through hands-on, real-world experiences. Throughout the school year, teachers may organize educational field trips that support the curriculum and enrich student learning. Individual classes may conduct fundraising activities to help offset the cost of these experiences.

A signed district permission slip is required for every field trip. Handwritten notes or verbal permission cannot be accepted. Students without a signed permission slip on file will not be permitted to participate.

Parents and guardians are welcome to volunteer as chaperones. All volunteers must complete the District's volunteer clearance process, including fingerprint clearance, before volunteering at school or participating in field trips. Volunteer clearance paperwork is available in the school office. Because the clearance process may take several weeks, families are encouraged to begin the process early if they are interested in volunteering.

We appreciate our volunteers and the important role they play in providing safe, meaningful, and enriching learning experiences for our students.

Family Events 

At Northside STEAM School, we believe that strong partnerships between home and school are essential to student success. Family engagement is at the heart of a thriving school community, and we encourage all families to participate in the many events and activities offered throughout the year.

Our family events celebrate student learning, strengthen connections between home and school, and provide meaningful opportunities for families to engage in their child's education. Throughout the year, Northside STEAM School hosts a variety of events, including monthly Community Night Outs, Walk to School Day, Science Fairs, Evening of Theater productions, the Holiday Drive-Thru Parade, the Spring Carnival, Open House, and many other special events that bring our school community together.

We value the partnership we share with our families and look forward to seeing you at our school events throughout the year.

Promotion 

At the end of the school year, Northside STEAM School proudly celebrates our sixth-grade students as they make the exciting transition to middle school. Families and friends are invited to attend the Sixth Grade Promotion Ceremony, where students are recognized for their accomplishments and growth during their elementary school years. Awards and special recognitions are presented as part of the ceremony.

Following the promotion ceremony, families host a celebratory reception to honor our graduates and recognize this important milestone. We look forward to celebrating the achievements of our sixth-grade students and wishing them continued success in the years ahead.

Yearbook 

The Northside STEAM School yearbook is a wonderful way to celebrate and preserve the memories of each school year.  Student leaders are selected to take photos of special events and help co-create the annual yearbook. Yearbooks are available for purchase online beginning in January.

Families are encouraged to visit the school website for ordering information and opportunities to upload photos from school events throughout the year. Parent photo submissions help us create a yearbook that reflects the many memorable experiences shared by our Northside community.

Our Student Support Services team works collaboratively with families, teachers, and community partners to provide academic, social-emotional, behavioral, and wellness supports that help every child reach their full potential. This chapter highlights the specialized services and resources available to support students and families throughout the school year.

Student Support Services

Northside STEAM School is committed to supporting the academic, social-emotional, behavioral, and physical well-being of every student. Our Student Support Services team partners with families, teachers, and administrators to ensure students receive the support they need to be successful in school. Services may include counseling, wellness support, academic interventions, health services, family outreach, and referrals to community resources. 

 

School Counselor

The Northside STEAM School Counselor supports students' academic, social-emotional, and behavioral success by helping them develop the skills needed to learn, build positive relationships, and make responsible decisions. The counselor provides classroom lessons, small group instruction, and individual support focused on topics such as friendship, conflict resolution, emotional regulation, problem-solving, and goal setting. The counselor also collaborates with families, teachers, and administrators to identify and address barriers to learning, coordinate interventions, and connect students and families with school and community resources when additional support is needed. 

 

Wellness Coach & Wellness Center 

The Northside STEAM School Wellness Coach supports students' social-emotional well-being by helping create a safe, caring, and inclusive school environment where every student feels connected and supported. The Wellness Coach manages the Northside Wellness Center, a welcoming space where students can receive short-term support, practice self-regulation strategies, develop coping skills, and return to class ready to learn.  Our Wellness Coach also provides push-in support and provides classes with social-emotional whole-class lessons.  

 

FAST Coordinator - F.A.S.T. - Family AND Schools Together

Black Oak Mine Unified School District is committed to supporting the academic, social, emotional, and overall well-being of our students and families. Our Family and School Together (FAST) Coordinator, school counselor, and wellness coach are available to assist families with a variety of needs and connect them with school and community resources.

Whether your family needs support with academics, social-emotional concerns, basic needs, or referrals to local county services, we are here to help. Families can submit a referral by visiting the parent section of their school's website or by contacting the school office for assistance.

Student Study Team (SST)

The Student Study Team (SST) is a collaborative team of parents or guardians, teachers, school administrators, and support staff who work together to identify strategies and interventions for students experiencing academic, behavioral, social-emotional, or attendance concerns. The goal of the SST process is to provide early support and help students be successful in the general education setting.

An SST meeting may be requested by a parent or school staff member. During the meeting, the team reviews the student's strengths, areas of concern, and current progress before developing a plan of support. The plan may include instructional strategies, behavioral supports, classroom accommodations, environmental changes, positive reinforcement, and other targeted interventions based on the student's individual needs.

After an agreed-upon period of time, the Student Study Team reconvenes to review the student's progress, evaluate the effectiveness of the interventions, and determine whether additional support or next steps are needed. Families who would like more information about the SST process or wish to request a meeting are encouraged to contact the school office.
